FEBRUARY 2012

COMMANDERS MESSAGE
Hello from the Commander’s desk!

January has been a slow month for us (besides the awesome New Year’s Eve Party).  Not too much has happened.  I hope so far the year has been good for you all!

We held our most recent general membership meeting in the dart room of the lounge.  From all accounts, everyone had a great time in that room.  We held the meeting in there because it was rather cold out and in the large meeting room as well.

Speaking of the large meeting/storage room, Gumby, “Late”, Larry, Ernie, Glenn, Frank Cox (with his son), Edd, and I did a major cleaning, (read – removed/took to the dump).  We took many things that were broken, unserviceable, and out dated to the dump.  Thanks to Gumby and his employer, Barto Heating and Appliance, we were able to use their stake side truck for the removals.  Somewhere along the way someone, (Ernie), came up with the wonderful idea to take the metal items to recycle.  We got a total of $65 for all of our stuff!   Thanks to all that came out and helped!  The storage/meeting room looks much much better!

Do not worry because there are still plenty of medical items (crutches, walkers, canes, and electric carts) for those in need.  Please sign these items out with the bartender on duty.  Also please do not loan a battery charger out as a single item because that goes with an electric cart.  People need the equipment in its entirety.  Do not piece meal it out.

I got the chance to meet a couple of people in the club room from Shasta Lake.  He had held every office in his post.  He told me he had joined his Post in 1970.  His wife is also very active.  Though I did not get the chance to talk to her much, her warm smile and demeanor told me that she was very involved in their Legion family.  I now know that my memory is terrible because I cannot remember their names.  I can hear it now, bad Commander, bad, bad Commander.  Sorry.

Also another recent guest, Mr. Sturr, from a Santa Clara Post was amongst us.  He commented on how well and informative our general membership meeting was.  He also got the chance to sing karaoke too!  He told me he loves to sing!  And my goodness, that man can belt out a tune!  He will be coming and going to our area as he has some business with Vandenberg throughout this year.

In this spirit, I would urge you to welcome everyone with a smile and a handshake when they first walk in our doors.  We all should know that feeling of fright or being timid when coming into a new setting.  Once we welcome them those feelings go away quickly!  We are all in this together!  We all served in one form or fashion!  We are all family in that aspect!  Welcome every stranger as a friend you have not made yet!  Basically, the old phrase of “Treat others how you would want to be treated,” goes a very long way to help welcome new people.

Nominations for post officers will begin at our next general membership meeting on 8 February.  As I have mentioned before, if you do not like something in the post, get involved!  You do not have to run for office.  However, you need to attend our meetings to ensure that your voice is heard.  Don’t just sit back and criticize, get involved!

Being an officer in the Post is not easy.  It may look easy but it’s hard work.  I mentioned previously that you have to give up some things to do so.  Family and other things take a temporary back seat to the tasks you willingly take on to help our Post run smoothly.  There are countless hours of soliciting business’ for donations, contacting other service organizations for help, going to public meetings to ensure our Post voice is heard, taking time out to write letters, take in money, watch over the books, bang your head against the wall when you receive all the blame for something that is not in your control, and a myriad of other things I have failed to mention.

The board of officers makes it look easy.  However, we are the first in the blame line.  But we walk proudly in our office.  I will be the first to say and defend that every Post officer on the current board works very hard.  I would also remind you that we officers are all volunteers.  We receive no pay for what we do.  There are people in all of the Legion family here that receive no pay but go about their chosen duty willingly.  Yes, we may get some mention in this column or other columns about how well we did our jobs or what shining example we are of a good Legionnaire, Auxiliary member, SAL member, or Rider.  All of us just smile and say thank you but mostly we want out of that spotlight and defer the true achievements to those that work hard to make us look good.  It is not for our ego or self-fulfillment, it is to serve others, remembering those that have gone on before us and for the future.  In essence, it’s not for glory, it’s for the veteran and their family, that we work so hard for.  That has been the center piece of our organization.  It is the veteran and their family!  Remember?

I look forward to seeing you all at our meetings.

As always, I am sure I forgot something or someone!  Please accept my apologies.

For God and Country,
James Adames
Commander

I would like to thank all the SAL Officers for your continued support of our post, and to all the Sunday volunteers who always work so hard to make our Sunday breakfast the great value it is. As always we extend the invitation to all to join us for Sunday breakfast from 8:00-11:00AM. If you haven’t come in to try us yet, we HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! Come out and let us serve you a great meal at a low price; and once you do, you will be back for more! Super Bowl Sunday
Are you ready for some FOOTBALL? You want to watch the Giants vs. Patriots matchup on Sunday, February 5th, but someone has chores for you to tackle? Well sneak out at 3:00 PM - just in time for the pre-game show, and rush on into the Post Clubroom. Just bring in your favorite Pot Luck dish to pass around. Then sit back and enjoy the game! Watch for drink specials and Door Prizes all day long. You can knock out those chores later if you don’t get sacked at the door!

Ladies Auxiliary Dinner Poll
Starting on January 13, 2012, the Ladies Auxiliary will have a polling sheet out on their dinner nights. They will ask those members in attendance what they would like to choose to see served the month posted for dinner. They are even willing to see what type of new or old dinners, members would like to see served more often. Please don’t be shy and not give your input, they want to make sure you come and support them and also enjoy what dinner they serve. Remember Friday night dinners are just one way the Auxilliary raises funds to support its many projects; and when the dinners are not well attended, the Auxiliary may even lose money. So, please make sure you give them your dinner preferences so everyone can benefit from their dinners!

SAL Guessing Jar Fundraiser
Time is running out so, have you made your guesses yet? The SAL members have a big jug in the Post Clubroom filled with what seems like hundreds or even thousands of pull tabs from can tops. You can have a chance to win 1/2 of the pot; if you guess correctly on how many tabs are actually in it! It will only cost you $1.00 per guess and if you prefer, you can make 6 guesses for $5.00. The tentative date for the drawing is in March. So you have only one month to make your guesses. And NO you cannot weigh the jar or measure its dimensions – that would be cheating! The more everyone guesses the bigger the winnings will be, so Good Luck and guess often!

ALR Blue Barrel Food Drive
Yes it is still in the Post Clubroom! The ALR organized Food Pantry Donation barrel could use some more donations on behalf of all the members of Post 211. It is the big blue barrel and I am sure you have all seen it in the Post Clubroom, but we are not getting very many donations placed in our barrel. The ALR has already made a donation to the Food Pantry and hopes to do even better with the next one. Please, donate any food item you can for this great community cause!

Membership Drive Challenge for 2011 - 2012
STOP procrastinating renewing your membership dues – NOW! 2012 membership year is here and we need your continued membership support; because sadly, we keep losing too many members to The Post Everlasting!  We know that money is tight in this economy, but you should be “proud” to help support your Veterans and Community through your continued membership in the American Legion. Membership cards for the 2012 year are available from Post 211’s Legion, Auxiliary, and SAL 1st Vice Officers. If you or someone you know still has not yet paid 2011 membership dues; please remember to not let your dues become delinquent and have membership benefits lapse. If you are not sure what year needs to be paid for, show your most current card to a Unit 1st Vice Commander. They would be happy to help determine if the dues are current or need to be brought up to date. President Marion’s and Commander James’ competition, to see who can get the best membership response, is beginning to look bad for Marion. The loser has to do the Chicken Dance in the Post Clubroom. (I keep forgetting to ask Jo Jo if she has finished that chicken suit for Marion yet?) Make renewing your Legion Membership one of your New Year’s resolutions and renew NOW!

We challenge all officers and all 211 members to try and sign up at least one new member! All you have to do is ask someone if they are a member of any American Legion; and if not, find out if they would be interested in becoming one. If you are not sure of the membership qualifications for each unit, just contact one of the Units’ Officers. They would be happy to give you that information. Let’s make this our best year ever for preserving our Post membership. For all you Early Bird members, thank you for your prompt continued membership!

Birthday Round-up
SAL member Ralphie Vargas is turning 67 this year and would like to Round-up all members to help him Celebrate on Saturday, February 18th at 1:00 PM. Come on down to the Post Clubroom and bring your favorite potluck dish to share will all the other partiers!

Hoe Down Dance
On March 3, 2012, our very own Marion Rocha will be holding a good ole Hoe Down to raise funds for her campaign to become District 16 President for the Ladies Auxiliary. She is promising it to be a root’n toot’n good time with food, music, and lock-ups in a special jail made by Gumby and over seen by Sheriff Ernie until the offenders make bail! So make sure you don’t miss this one or we might just have to send the Sheriff out for you!

SAL Benefit Drawing
How would you like to win  $500.00 and help the SAL raise funds to send members to the State Convention in Redding this year? On Saturday, May 26th the SAL will hold a Reverse Drawing at 3:00 PM. Only 200 tickets will be sold for this drawing! There will be a total of 9 winners for amounts of $50.00 – 5, $75.00 – 2, $100.00 – 1, and the Grand Prize of $500.00.  All it would take for you to be one of the big winners is to make a $10.00 donation; and with that donation you receive $1.00 off their fabulous, already reasonably priced, Sunday breakfasts. So don’t wait too long to get your ticket and miss out on being the BIG WINNER – get yours now before they are sold out!

Ideas for Saturday Night’s Entertainment????
Are you tired of the same-o same-o things happening at the Post? Then it is time to do some brain storming! We are still desperately trying to find alternative entertainment on our Saturday nights; so our members can look forward to new things at the Post. We are looking for your ideas or if you are interested in being our entertainment; please let us know. Maybe you might know of a singer, group, instrumentalist, or other entertainer who is interested in performing to get some local recognition – let them know and have them contact the Post Clubroom or E-board member. In the Past we have had bands (Roadhouse 101, Tinnitus & the Remnants), soloists (Dan Malley), DJ’s, Open Mike Nights, etc. Any idea is greatly welcomed.  Watch for flyers or announcements around the Post Clubroom (scheduled entertainment may be on short notice) as to what type of entertainment will be offered; and please come out and support the weekly choice. By all means, feel free to give feedback to let us know what you enjoy most.

Watch for More information on
Building Repair Fundraisers: I know I keep on saying it (like a broken record), but –  Individual Engraved Donor Plaques are now available, for $25.00 each, to help raise funds for much needed roofing, plumbing, heating, carpet, and drywall repairs to Our Post. The decision on  how to display them once they are purchased is still being determined. Please help out if you can either by donating your services, giving a donation, or by obtaining a sponsored donation from local businesses to memorialize your loved ones or just let everyone know how much you appreciate The Wm. Bill Proud Post!

Please, if you have any ideas for fundraising or know of anyone who can write a grant proposal, please pass on that information to any board member!  (Some ideas could be a Mystery Who Done it Dinner, Casino Night, Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance, Monthly 50/50 drawing, money raffle drawings, card or game nights – just for fun, or bake sales) Do any of those interest anyone of you or do you have a better idea? Help please and let a board member know!

Darts: Dart tournaments are back in the Post Clubroom on Friday nights. Make sure you join in and have fun to make sure they stick around this time!

Bike Nights: Are starting up again - watch for flyers in the Post Clubroom.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:
To attend your Post’s & Unit meetings!
Saturday SAL lunch! You won’t be disappointed.
Sunday Breakfasts are by SAL or ALR! YUM! They have the best omelets in Lompoc and you won't find a better deal!
Sing Karaoke Wednesday ,  Friday, & Saturday nights (Don’t forget to tip them)!
Friday evening dinners! Helpers and participation needed, or some dinners might be cancelled!
Support the American Legion Welcome Them Home!
To tip the smiling bartenders and bar managers!
Support Post functions (Have great times and do something good for your Post 211 organizations)!
Volunteers are needed for functions and committees!
To get involved!!!!!!!

READING BUDDIES!
Did you know we have a small library in the back room?  If you like to read, check it out.  Take whatever book you want to read and when you are through bring it back or pass it on.  Want to get rid of some of your old books and hate to toss them out?  Well, just bring them to the Post and someone will read it!

I know I have taken advantage of our library.  We have many well-known authors and many types of books to read from mysteries, science fiction, and romance to non-fiction.  Come in and check out the “Library”.  Linda

Do you know any active Military Troops who might like to join Post 211? If you do, please let them know that the Legion will pay their dues as long as they are on active duty! The next time you see a homeless Vet, why not buy them lunch? (The Post is willing to reimburse you with a receipt) and also tell them if they need a place to receive mail, they can use the Post address: 630 North H Street, Lompoc, CA 93436 and we can receive their mail, and hold it until they can pick it up, or even use our Veteran’s Resource Computer Center to find employment – they will need to get the key from the bartender on duty. (Please use it for official use and not searching U-Tube videos or joke sites and such!)

Also a reminder to all members:  When you happen to go to the Post Clubroom, look around.  There are many flyers on the bulletin board, chalk board, walls, or windows that have event information you may be interested in. Most events can’t make the newsletter because we do not receive the information with much notice! More importantly, there are a couple of flyers at the Post about returning veterans from Iraq and/or Afghanistan who can go to a retreat for free (transportation, lodging, etc.) to recoup and get back into society after the traumas they have been through.  It entails hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing and hunting, etc.  There are several places in the U.S. for them to go.  There is also a notice from the EDD (employment dept. of the state) to hire veterans to help serve veterans, etc.

FYI: All of your Post 211 Officers want to make sure that every member can enjoy belonging to our organization. Please get involved in whatever way you can. We all are very busy or hit hard by the economy; but only a few seem to be dedicated to the aims and purposes of The American Legion by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.

If you or any other member should ever have a problem that needs resolution; please document, in writing, what the problem is and present it to your E-board. Action can not be taken on any issue, on word of mouth only. So please, document your issues to ensure a solution to your problem. Thank you.

FYI:  This is an important notice for the men and women who have been honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States. California Business and Professions Code Section 16102 states,

"Every soldier, sailor or marine of the United States who has received an honorable discharge or a release from active duty under honorable conditions from such service may hawk, peddle and vend any
goods, wares or merchandise owned by him, except spirituous, malt, vinous or other intoxicating liquor, without payment of any license, tax or fee whatsoever, whether municipal, county or State, and the
board of supervisors shall issue to such soldier, sailor or marine, without cost, a license therefor."

The DD214 is the only form needed to confirm your honorable discharge. Please call the Lompoc City Clerk Stacy Alvarez at 875-8241 for any    questions regarding this California State Law.

The Lompoc City Government does not know who or how many veteran-owned businesses are doing business in the city. Also, not one Councilmember appointed a veteran representative on the newly formed Economic Development Committee. Obviously the city does not believe veterans have an important part in the Economic Development of Lompoc. I personally believe they will be surprised.

The Lompoc Veteran organizations recognize veteran-owned businesses are an important economic element in the city. For this reason I ask that men and women business owners who have been honorably discharged from the military send an email to flgrube1@aol.com or call 740-1804 with your name, name of your business, and the branch of military. Maybe the Lompoc Veteran organizations can help.

VETERAN’S AFFAIR PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS? Fellow Legionnaire, Harley Santos has been selected to be a representative for the State of California Veterans in Washington this year. If you have any questions or concerns about any of the Veteran Programs or lack of programs; please let Harley know, so he can bring those concerns to the Government’s attention in Washington. Please either e-mail him at (FB111A1@msn.com) or leave him your concern at the Post Clubroom in the “Harley” envelope before February 26, 2012. Make your voice heard now or they may take away some programs due to lack of funding!

MESSAGES FROM THE AUXILIARY

AUXILIARY PRESIDENT – Marion Rocha
Ladies, our next meeting will be on Monday, February 6th, in the East Wing conference room of the Memorial Building Veteran’s Hall, at 7:00 PM. All ladies are invited to attend our meeting and participate in planning our activities. Won’t you please join in and give your voice? I hope to see everyone at the meeting. We will be having a “Fall Proof Program” presentation on Stability and Mobility from Carnahan Therapy and this will be our final meeting to put the finishing touches our Western Dance / Hoe Down. Also, please bring your Community Service sheets (if you have one) and turn them into me.

NATIONAL SECURITY – Help please - Our Auxiliary collects Manufacturer’s coupons (no local coupons - Von’s, Long’s, etc.) to help support our Troops.  If you would like to contribute, you can bring your clipped or non-clipped coupons to our meeting or drop them off at Post 211’s Clubroom. We reached 2nd place this year and would really like to finally get 1st place this coming year! This is really a great program for our Troops and many of you receive a Sunday newspaper with coupon inserts – why not give them to us instead of throwing them away!

District Meeting

Our next District 16 Meeting will be Sunday, February 26th at Post 50 in Paso Robles at 10:00 AM. I hope you all can make it.

If you have any concerns or questions I can be contacted at 705-2005.

For God and County – Marion

1st VICE PRESIDENT– Maryellen Arias
Please ladies let’s get get caught up on our 2011 and get your 2012 dues paid. You are not allowed to utilize any Post privileges, without a current 2012 membership card!  So, please don’t wait any longer and pay your dues. Marion and Commander James have a bet to see who can do the best with Membership for the year. The loser will have to do the Chicken Dance and the men are still beating us. I heard Jo Jo is already making Marion a chicken suit; so let’s show them we mean business and let Commander James wear the suit! Remember with your dues, the Auxiliary can continue to donate to its many charity requests. Please think about continuing your membership in our Auxiliary? Just drop your payment off at the Post Clubroom or you can mail your dues to American Legion Auxiliary PO Box 522 Lompoc, CA 93438. Don’t forget, about all the member discounts & services that you are able to get for being an Auxiliary member. Please feel free to contact me for the information at 741-7590.

If you have moved, please let us know.  You can email (Tracerkong@comcast.net), call (Tracy (805)315-6673), or mail in your address change to: American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 211, P.O. Box 522, Lompoc, CA  93438, or leave it in our folder at the Post Bar.

SECRETARY (Temp) – Linda Phelps
The Ladies Auxiliary does two Friday night dinners at Post 211’s Clubroom. They cook and serve on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. This month, Friday, February 10th, they will be offering their delicious Chicken Dinner with all the fixings and Birthday Cake (in honor of Joanna and Jo Jo’s birthdays – poor Jo Jo will be cooking on her own birthday – show her some LOVE!), on Friday, February 24th; they will be serving up an Enchilada dinner including one of their tasty desserts.  (If anyone is interested in helping us in the kitchen in any way, we would appreciate it. Lucy Rocha will not be able to continue to cook – Doctor’s orders and Jo Jo could really use some help!) We hope all Post 211 members will come out and help support us and enjoy a great meal. Remember this is one way we raise funds to utilize toward our community and welfare projects. Don’t forget to fill out our Dinner Poll when you are there to give us input as to what dinners you would like served!

The Auxiliary would like to thank member, Reiko Schindel, for donating a beautiful handmade afghan that was raffled off and won by Buck Barker(?) to help raise much needed funds. I hope you were one of the lucky ones who were able to purchase her outstanding meal on the 27th before they sold out. I heard it was fabulous! Thank you Reiko for a job well done!

Attention ladies: The Auxiliary is always looking for active duty troops that we can send care packages to. If you know of someone who would like a package, please provide one of our Auxiliary members with their mailing address and any special requests from home.

We could also need your leftover or new yarn. Shelie Jackson wants to make baby booties for some of the pregnancy support groups while she is in recovery. Shelly would really appreciate any amount you can give her to help her stay busy. If you would care to donate any yarn to her cause, please let one of our officers know. We thank you in advance for your contribution. Also, if you would like a pair made to order or to give as a gift, Shelie will gladly make you a pair for only $10.00.  Yes, she can do team colors for all you cold footed sports fans!

AMERICANISM CHAIR - Tracy Hudson
Don’t’ forget to display your American Flag (if you aren’t already)!  Remember February 12 – Lincoln’s Birthday, February 20 – President’s Day. If you should know of any organization that could use an American flag, please have them contact me at (805) 315-6673.  We can help to provide them with a new flag! Also, please remember, if you have an old, worn, or damaged flag that is no longer presentable, you can bring your old flags to the Post Clubroom and the men will make sure that it gets retired properly.

PLEASE visit the ALR website often for changes; and why not, sign the Guest Book, and let us know what you think of the site when you visit? We always are open to your ideas or concerns you may have on the sites pages – ie. Needs more updating (or your glowing praise – lol). As always Thank you to Mike Owen, Thor, and James Adames who have put a lot of time and effort into the creation of the website:  www.alrpost211.org So, remind other members to check it out - if you know they still have not. We are just not getting the amount of views to the site as we should!  I know we have approximately 500 total members at Post 211, but only receive approximately 130 members viewing the site each month. So if you are unable to use the site regularly, please let me know and I can have a copy of the Newsletter mailed to you – keeping abreast of Post 211’s news should be important to all of you!

Have a Happy and Blessed New Year!

Thank You
Thank you, to Gumby Theis, Larry Hale, Ernie Phelps, Glenn Rodriguez, Frank Cox (with his son), Edd Strube, and James Adames (if I forgot someone else who helped please forgive me) for getting together and cleaning up Post 211’s large main storage room. And a special Thank you to Barto Heating and Appliance for loaning us their truck to haul away all the unusable items to the dump and recyclers. It was a daunting task and they did a great job! Thanks guys!

Thank you, to Kim Theis for graciously taking on the task of The Legion’s finances. Your help is so greatly needed and appreciated in this daunting task!

Thank you, to Reiko Schindel for serving us such a fabulous meal on January 27th and for donating such a beautiful afghan which was raffled that day as well. Next time I will have to make sure I get there earlier, so I don’t miss out.

Thank you, to Mary Beaton, Katie, Brett Kelly, John Porr, Cheryl Card, Pat Midgely, Glenn Rodriguez, Gumby (Theis), and everyone else who has worked so hard to spruce up the Post and Clubroom. It looks fantastic and now it may appeal to non-members who may want to book their events at Post 211. Awesome job people!!!!

Thank you, to ME (if you don’t know who I am shame shame on you) for continuing on with our newsletter – even though I still have to nag people for information each month! But I really don’t care about being thanked, I just want to see if anyone is really reading the newsletter – ARE YOU?

Thank you and HELP for our ALR website (www.alrpost211.org) – Thor (Thorson) aka: Thunder and Mike Owen. They have worked hard on the site; but unfortunately they are unable to keep up maintenance of it. Both have very chaotic lives right now. We are looking for someone to help out on the site, so if you are interested please let us know. (I {Tracy} am only able to add text at this time – but hope to learn all the ins and outs of the site.)We need to have the website for everyone to use and enjoy! Please check it out – before it is gone!

Thank you, to all of our members who continuously and generously give their time and donations to our Unit.  I wish I knew all of their names, so I could let you all know of their generosity & kindness. Lastly, a great big - Thank you, to Bert Hudson and GRAPHIC SYSTEMS (403 North “G” Street, Lompoc), for continually donating his time and printing, to help us get our newsletter to you and more. I guess my only way out of doing the newsletter is by going to Post Everlasting; and that ain’t going to happen. For now you have to put up with me!

Information or comments for the newsletter should be turned in no later than the 20th day of the month preceding its publication, please!!! You may post your information in the “yellow envelope” at the bar or emailed to me (Tracy Hudson) at Tracerkong@comcast.net.  To all members:  I hope you would provide me with your information for the section in the newsletter with celebrations (births, weddings, birthday wishes, anniversaries) illnesses, and deaths, so if you have or know of any announcements, please won’t you let me know?
